Real People – V

 Real People – Veronica

Meet Veronica, another real person, she is 46 years old, but in her head and heart she will always be 18.  Veronica doesn’t stand on ceremony – she’d really much prefer it if you called her V.  She has been married for a remarkable 27 years, and has 3 beautiful children, as well as 2 amazing grandchildren who are her  world.
V has a passion for taking pictures – with subjects ranging from anything to everything – but she much prefers being behind the camera, instead of in front of it.

I’ll let V tell you a few things about herself:

‘I love to make cards, wedding bouquets and floral decorations.  I recently lost my mum and dad within a 6 week period which hit me very hard.  They were my rock and were always there for me.  It makes me wonder about my life and how I should live each day as if it were my last, because you really never know what’s around the corner.’

Thank you V.  Have a long and happy 18th Birthday!

Real People – Real Sophie

Real People – Real Sophie

I was introduced to Sophie through a mutual friend of ours called May (thanks, May), and before we actually met face-to-face, we got to know each other as best we could via the scientific wonder of email.  As we corresponded over the following  days, Sophie mentioned that she’d like to be photographed as part of my project – as a personal dedication to the memory of her mum.

I continue to be fascinated by everyone I meet and how each person has something different to convey through their own personal portraits.  This time I’ll let Sophie reveal her own reasons, in her own words:

“The main reason the ‘real people’ project caught my eye, and why I considered volunteering, was because my mum passed away in December and I wanted to say that grief cannot be seen or heard … only people who have experienced the loss of their loved ones will understand how much of your thoughts and soul have gone with them… the only thing left is memories.”

I asked Sophie if she’d bring along something to the photo-shoot – something  she could use to help express her feelings   We first considered a keepsake ring that had been a gift from Sophie’s mum.  But the most important thing that Sophie had brought with her – all she really treasured – were the priceless memories of her mum – and so here she represents her loss and her love through the simple gesture of  empty heart-shaped hands.

Getting to meet the real Sophie has reminded me that even when we find empty spaces in our lives, they can still contain so very much that’s positive and precious to us.

Thank you Sophie.

Real People – Real Girl Suki

Real People Photography Project

I try to encourage everyone who takes part in the Real People project to perhaps bring along something personal and especially defining to them.  A real girl named Suki came along to the shoot and was happy to oblige.  She brought along a Stitch 626 teddy (A character you might recognise from the animated Disney classic: Lilo & Stitch).   Suki  fell in love with the movie, and its abiding message:  ” it shows no matter how different you are, or where you are from, you can be accepted.”
There is a particularly touching scene in the film where  the angry and troubled Alien creature called Stitch finds a picture of Lilo’s deceased parents, which the lonely little Hawaian girl has been keeping hidden under her pillow.   Suki quoted what Lilo said to her strange – and equally lonely – newfound companion, Stitch,  and how she used a special word found in Hawaian culture: “Ohana means family, family means nobody gets left behind. Or forgotten.”  That is the message so important to Suki: ” I love my family to pieces. That is the reason why I chose the teddy.”

Thank you Suki – Stitch 626 was a very special choice.

Real People – Real Girl, May Ling

Real People Photography Project

I’ve only come to know May over the period of a few short months, but it’s certainly been enough time for me to confirm that she is possibly one of the most happy and positive characters I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting.

This is the real May:
She studied Japanese and Management at the University of Leeds, and during her second year she visited Japan for the very first time.  During her stay she lived entirely with a Japanese host family, sharing fully in the unique traditions and spiritual diversity of their everyday lives.
She said it was a real eye-opener and the best year of her life. “Japan – with the kindness of all the people I had met and its rich culture – really changed me” .

The diary you see in the picture contains an entry for each of the days that May spent during her time in Japan.  It was used to record some of the happiest times in her life – not to mention a fair measure of the bad times too.
All the emotions that May felt when she left home for the first time, to live and immerse herself  in such a strange and wonderful foreign country, all of these memories are kept in this precious journal where May can relive them time and time again.

Real Guy Matthew

Real People

Meet Matthew, another real and unique personality  with whom I had the opportunity to photograph last Sunday for my Real People Project. He said this is my first – and probably last -  chance for a personal shoot, as he doesn’t truly feel comfortable in front of a camera.
Over steaming mugs of ground-coffee, we enjoyed a little chat about local Rugby League; especially Matthew’s beloved team of Featherstone Rovers.
An all-round great guy with good sense of humour. Certainly nothing to be camera-shy about.

I asked Matthew if he could bring along something that best describes him personally: something that he loves or is his abiding passion.
He brought this little “Humphrey” toy with him.  This cute little stuffed elephant was chosen by him and his second half as a gift for their child before it was born. This toy represents a simple but touching gesture from two loving  parents.
